Skype App Review for Apple iOS
Skype is one of the most popular VoIP (Voice over IP) and instant messaging services used in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Skype allows users to video chat over their personal computers via webcams. Skype was first released in August 2003 and was purchased by Microsoft in 2011.
With Skype, you can enjoy unlimited voice calling, video calling and instant messaging for free via your computer or smartphone (data charges may be a separate charge with your cell phone carrier). You can chat with your Skype contacts whenever you want and wherever you are as long as an internet connection is available–via your cell phone carrier’s wireless data network or Wi-Fi. You can make cheaper calls on Skype with your friends and love ones. If you have Skype credit, you can make international calls to telephone or mobile numbers.
Skype version 4.0 works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPod touch, and other H.264 compatible devices. For the latest version of Skype that runs on Apple’s iOS, the developers added the ability to send and receive videos. For video calls, sometimes I have a delay of 10 to 15 seconds before it connects to the other Skype user. Sometimes if the signal is a bit poor, I can hear the audio first before the video will appear. Although, the lag is a bit disappointing at first, once the Skype conversation lasts a while the connection becomes smooth and consistent and sometimes the video quality is a bit blurry. When it comes to the audio quality, the audio sounds almost perfectly clear if the volume of the iPhone is at the maximum level. Via a Wi-Fi connection, the audio quality improves significantly. Skype is user friendly and can be easily used by anyone. Even my 10 year-old daughter knows how to use Skype.
Overall, if you have friends and love ones abroad, Skype is one of the best applications that you can use to stay connected with them and I highly recommended the Skype app. As long as there is a Wi-Fi connection, you can make calls anywhere at any time. Hopefully, there will be future updates that focus on providing better quality video so that the video chat experience will be more enjoyable to users like me. Although, there are some issues when it comes to video calling, I still give 4 out of 5 stars for this app.
